Prime Minister Mark Carney’s historic announcement in Yellowknife last week was welcomed by the North.

Student Spotlight: Sherifa Razak

Looking at Sherifa Razak, one would probably not assume she was an international student from northern Italy. She is 21 years old, wears a hijab and was born in Ghana. Her family emigrated to Italy when she was just a toddler.

From handcrafted soaps to precision fades, the Black Student Support and Engagement’s (BSSE) Melanin Market was a showcase of Black talent that highlighted local entrepreneurs, culture and celebration of Black History month.

The LinX Student Lounge looked more like a pop-up boutique on Jan. 21, with racks of brand-name clothing, boxes full of running shoes and long queues of students eager to grab some deals.

Record-breaking snowstorm shuts Humber for two days.

Environment Canada reported that as much as 56 centimetres of snow fell in yesterday’s storm, causing flight cancellations, vehicular accidents, severe transit disruptions, along with school and post-secondary school closures across the region.

Although Humber Polytechnic was closed on Sunday and Monday, considerable work had been done overnight to clear the parking lots, roadways and sidewalks.

Princely blessings from spoken word, hip-hop

Some people find their purpose deliberately. Others stumble upon it. For Prince Amoako, spoken word poetry was not on his radar — it was a surprise that he says became a blessing almost 10 years ago, while he was still a student at Humber Polytechnic.

Etobicoke councillor hosts annual Thistletown Christmas market, tree-lighting ceremony

Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti hosted his annual Christmas market at the Thistletown Community Centre on Dec. 6.

The Albion Islington Square BIA, the Rexdale Community HUB, Thistletown Lions Club, Arts Etobicoke and Albion Neighbourhood Services – Boys and Girls Club all helped in hosting the community gathering.

It was a lively and well-attended event, complete with craft vendors, live music, a balloon-animal-making Santa, free samosas, hot chocolate, and a magic show.

The snow and cold temperatures didn't deter celebrations at the brand-new Finch West LRT station on Sunday morning.  Hundreds of excited people eagerly lined up outside as early as 2:30 a.m. to ride on the new Line 6.

The president and CEO of Humber Polytechnic, Ann Marie Vaughan, told about 200 people how her great-grandmother was known to be one of the most bereaved mothers in Newfoundland in the Great War.
