My journey to journalism

I’ve been fascinated with the news since I was much younger. I love having the “scoop” and getting to relay it to other people. I also love getting to know people’s stories: what makes them who they are. I am typically very intrigued when I can tell that I am not getting the full story. What are they leaving out? Why? What are they running from?

I always thought I would eventually work in journalism. Once, when I was still in high school, my class had the opportunity to tour a radio news studio on an outing. My classmate’s elder brother, who was a well-known radio show host, was there that day. It was so exciting to get to meet him and see that he was just as nice in person as he was on the radio. That was a great day that I will always remember.

I also remember, several years ago, my French professor at university had told the class about a French call-in radio show being run by Alliance Française. We had the opportunity to call and speak with the host in French, answer a question and win a prize. I won. The prize was a record by Mariz, a young up-and-coming Zouk singer from Guadeloupe. My parents recorded the show. Everyone was quite astonished to hear me speaking in French on the radio.

Ever since then, journalism has been a career goal for me. My career certainly took a few detours, but those detours enriched my overall lived experience and will make me a better writer and journalist.
